Investigating the properties of materials in Year 1...look at the amazing scientific vocabulary we have used! Can you tell your grown-ups the meaning of any of the words?

Year 1 enjoyed their first outdoor PE lesson of the year, practising their throwing and catching skills!

A great afternoon in Y1C, learning about waterproof and absorbent materials. Can you tell your grown-ups the meaning of waterproof and absorbent?

As part of our materials unit, we have been learning about the physical properties of different materials. We explored the words transparent, opaque and shiny, to name a few, and searched for objects in our classroom to fit the description. Well done!

Y1C used their aerial map of the school to identify different buildings and features in our school grounds. We talked about how a bird's eye view/aerial view is what we can see if we were up high, looking down. A great start to the topic Y1!

Y1C have started exploring number patterns, using apparatus, to aid our understanding. What a great start Y1!

Thank you to all the parents/carers who attended the Y1 Maths Workshop. I hope it gave you an insight into how we teach maths here at STOC.

In science we have been learning about objects and materials. First we looked at objects made from just one material, before exploring objects made out of more than one material.

During Spring 1, Y1C are learning about Knights and Castles in their History lessons. First we learnt about the best place to build a castle, before exploring the different features of Motte and Bailey and Stone Keep castles.

Year 1C loved their music lesson this week! They explored The Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker

We can name the four seasons of the year. We looked at the changes during each season and described how they look and feel! We looked at what happens to the trees during each season and created a seasons calendar

On Wednesday 9th October, we had a wonderful day learning all about Mary Seacole, as part of Black History Month. We have learnt so much about her life and why she is a significant woman from history. Can you remember why she was treated unfairly? What was the name of the hospital she set up in the Crimea?

Year 1 PSHE

We have been looking at our school rules and how we can make sure we follow them. Everyone in the class decided that when we are kind to others it makes them feel happier. Listening to others in class and we had a go at listening to each other’s stories. Sorting out different pictures, deciding if they are unkind or kind made us all understand that rules are important everywhere to make people safe and joyful.
